Our Aims & Objectives | 本會宗旨與具體目標

The counseling and support services offered by CMHA are able to take into account these culturally influential problems, in a way that mainstream mental health charities never could.

by Genevieve Roberts

The Chinese Mental Health Association (CMHA) is actively involved in providing direct services, increasing mental health awareness, representing the wide spectrum of Chinese mental health issues in public forums and raising its profile in the overall Chinese community. We also hope that we can:

  • Safeguard and maintain the mental well-being of Chinese people in the UK
  • Lobby for better mental health services for Chinese people in the UK
  • Alleviate the stigmas and prejudices associated with mental health issues amongst the Chinese community in the United Kingdom
  • Improve the quality of life amongst Chinese users and their carers
  • Help users' access services that are already provided through statutory and voluntary organisations
  • Raise further awareness on Chinese mental health issues amongst mainstream service providers
  • Most importantly, to be the patient and caring voice for people suffering in life

What is Mental Health? 甚麼是心理健康

Mental health issues are a stigma in any society and none more so than in traditional Chinese society. Mental health problems know no bounds and can affect people from all walks of life; social, economic and racial backgrounds are no barrier to common afflictions such as depression due to the stresses that modern day life can bring.

The highly publicised suicides of Hong Kong superstar Actor / Singer Leslie Cheung and highly successful Asian American Writer, Iris Chang, have brought mental health issues to the forefront of many Chinese people's thoughts. If you are currently suffering from any mental health issues, remember, you are not alone.

香港知名影星與歌手張國榮以及成功的美國華人作家 Iris Chang 的自殺事件,使得許多中國人開始意識到心理健康議題的重要性。如果你現在正遭受心理健康問題之苦,記住,你並不是孤單的一個人。

Examples of Mental Health Issues

The most common issues that can cause mental health problems of varying degrees amongst Chinese people and new migrants within the United Kingdom include the following:

  • Racism and prejudice
  • Dispersed settlement and isolation
  • Long and unlegislated working hours
  • Lack of English language skills
  • Unfair stereotypes
  • Inter-generational issues

Some other defining factors which include unmet cultural expectations, language barriers; lack of community support, isolation and the stressful and demanding nature of the catering trade all contribute to mental distress. These illnesses can manifest themselves as depression, self inflicted wounds, etc. Some less well informed Chinese would attribute these problems as a 'Western' disease but these afflictions know no boundaries and affect people of all races and social - economic backgrounds.

  • 受到種族歧視和偏見
  • 分散的居所和被孤立
  • 長時間和不合法的工作
  • 缺乏對英語語言的掌握
  • 不公平的成見
  • 不同輩份間的代溝問題
