Oral History
HISTORY DOES NOT JUST FADE INTO THE PAST
What is Oral History?
For everyone young and old, life is a journey and adventure; everyone has a fascinating life story to tell! Oral History is a deeply personal way to understand one's own history and experiences. Oral histories are not written on paper, but are recorded memories of people's life experiences.
The focus of this now completed Oral History project is to bring the older and younger Chinese generations together via oral history interviews. From stories of life in rural Guangdong, to the Japanese occupation of China, to the struggles of the first generation whom laid the foundations for the current crop of British Chinese; the oral history project has been fascinating for all involved.
CMHA hoped to raise further understanding and awareness about Chinese culture, lifestyle, education, migration and mental health issues. For the young Chinese volunteers involved, the project enables many to learn more about their heritage, explore their roots and of course, make new friends.
CHINESE COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The now complated project's priorities is to outreach to the Chinese community and gather enough information to compile a series of oral histories. We produced the following:
a DVD about Chinese people and their oral histories
an interactive cd rom for children and young people to learn about Chinese culture
an education resource booklet that will have research information about Chinese culture
This Oral History Project was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
