Training Day Summary
On January 7, 2006, the Chinese Oral History Project truly commenced with a special training day being arranged for all the enthusiastic volunteers and organizers involved. The main emphasis of the specialized training was on interview and information extraction skills in order to produce an eventual DVD.
Under the guidance of oral history expert and historian Roger Kitchen, all the volunteers learnt the basic fundamentals of the interview process. This was in order for the chosen Chinese interviewees, from all walks of life in the United Kingdom, to share their life stories and experiences.
The interviews skills that were taught included "How to conduct the interview" via various methods ("being interested, listening carefully and being respectful") as well as technical aspects such as how to transfer the recorded interviews from the supplied audio mini disc player to being transcribed and altered via computer to eventually being included in the DVD. All the skills learnt were put into practice in a series of mock interviews carried out. The training day was a great success and was truly enjoyed by all involved. The skills learnt have laid the foundations for the Chinese Oral History project to succeed and given vital new skills to those whom attended.
