1921
By 1921 there were recorded around 2419 Chinese living Britain, which is a major
increase since the census in 1851 recording only 78.

1937
Due to the growth of the Chinese community in Britain by this time, the first Chinese
school was opened in Middlefields in the East End.

1940s
British Census shows 387 living in Britain.

1948
In this year it was decided that the former colonies of Britain and indeed those remaining
colonies could have official British citizenship. This meant that people could enter and
remain in Britain if they so wished.

1950s
The largest scale of immigration into Britain was recorded during this time period and
into the 1960s mainly due to the British Nationality Act of 1948 allowing British citizenship
for those people living in Britain’s former and current colonies. Chinese mainly from Hong
Kong immigrated during this time because the labour shortage after the Second World War.

1951
This year sees the number of Chinese restaurants in Britain going up to around 36 restaurants in the UK.
