1957
The number of Chinese restaurants opening up by this time was around
300 in Britain. Due to this increase, the word 'Chinatown' which originally
was used in the Poplar district of London after the first opening of a Chinese
laundry in 1902, became the term to describe areas of the of British cities
in which Chinese restaurants had become the heart of the Chinese communities.

Gerrard Street in London’s Chinatown sees the opening of the very
first Chinese community centre.

The Immigration Act of 1962 placed restrictions on immigrants from
Britain's colonies and former colonies settling in the UK.
