Befriending aims to ease the sense of loneliness and isolation felt by those suffering from mental health problems. Sufferers tend to have difficulties forming and maintaining friendships because of their illness' symptoms, stigma attached to mental illness and low self esteem.

For Chinese mental health sufferers, language and cultural differences also contribute to their difficulties, increasing their sense of isolation. Befriending is a positive way for Chinese mental health users to get back into society through friendship and support.

Who can be a Befriending Client?

All Chinese mental health service users are those who:

  • Are aged 18 years or older
  • Reside in London
  • Feel isolated and have difficulties in joining social activities without support
  • Have a key worker willing to co-operate with CMHA throughout the course of the service

Priority will be given to those Chinese mental health sufferers who live alone in the community with minimal support.

How Does It Work?

Volunteers are recruited, trained and supported by the Befriending Coordinator. They are then matched according to interests, language, age etc. appropriately with someone in need of befriending. Befriending service can last up to 6 months where Befriending clients will be encouraged and accompanied to join a weekly CMHA user social group. If Befriending clients feel confident and are interested, they are encouraged to become Befrienders themselves, helping others in need.

What Will Volunteer Befrienders Do?

  • Meet the Befriending client regularly at their home or somewhere else mutually agreed.
  • Plan & accompany the Befriending client to join social activities.
  • Introduce & accompany with Befriending client to local social resources e.g. Chinese Community Centres
  • Provide emotional support to the Befriending clients in their particularly stressful times.

Volunteer Befrienders Do NOT:

  • Carry out any physical or domestic care or handy tasks such as cleaning, gardening.
  • Provide any specialised advice such as benefits entitlement or offer counselling.
  • Escort Befriending client under Section

Referrals

Those wishing to use the Befriending service can be referred through their GP and their mental health practitioners. Self referral is also accepted when there is no key worker involved. However, Befriending clients must give consent for us to contact their medical professionals. Once a referral is lodged, a joint home visit or office interview will be arranged and a needs assessment and further clarifications of our service boundaries will be made.

On-Going Support

Once a Befriender and Befriending client have been matched, the Befriending Coordinator will have regular contact with both parties to monitor progress and address any issues that may arise.
