The Wellbeing Club is aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at Chinese Elders who wish to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Through our programme of fun and informative activities, talks and exercise classes, we wish to give attendees the awareness, knowledge and means to work on raising their own health and thus preventing more acute problems from arising later on in life. The Wellbeing Club is also a safe, friendly and open social space; giving our attendees a platform to make new friends and catch up with old ones.

How does it work?

Our Wellbeing Club is based at Age UK’s Meritage Centre in Hendon and takes place on every Mondays (except bank holidays). The club is run by a team combined of staff, volunteers and also sessional workers who attend to deliver specific activities. Activities include exercise classes, health talks, Tai Chi, a luncheon club, regular parties, dance classes and much more. An optional nutritious lunch is always served.

Example of previous health talks include:

  • Medical Vocabulary – a bilingual doctor visited the Club to teach our attendees the English phrases for a number of common complaints
  • Healthy Eating – a qualified nutritionist delivered a presentation on portion control and the food pyramid
  • Winter Health – two practicing doctors, one from mainstream medicine and one from Traditional Chinese medicine, gave advise on keeping healthy in the cold
  • Healthy Snack Choices – two nutrition studies MA students came in to talk about healthy ways to snack, suggest delicious alternatives to high salt, high fat and high sugar junk foods, and share home made snacks with the attendees.

Example of other activities include:

Get Togethers – opportunity for attendees to catch up with each other over tea and biscuits, share news and exchange information

Cooking Demonstrations – user led classes on preparing Chinese pastries

Christmas Parties – a chance for everybody to celebrate the festive season over shared food and music

Chinese New Year celebration events – welcoming in the year of the Dragon with a packed day of fun activities, traditional music and dances

All our sessions are open to the general public and there is no waiting list. Simply contact us for the dates of the next session and drop in to meet the team and the members of the club.
